Undervolting Ryzen 9000
Curve Optimizer and Curve Shaper are not the only ways to undervolt your Ryzen CPU. You can also undervolt by lowering the operating temperature.
In this video, I cover three topics related to undervolting Ryzen CPUs:
1) How the Voltage-Frequency-Temperature curve enables undervolting through lower temperatures.
2) How Curve Optimizer works in different operating temperature scenarios.
3) How the Curve Shaper Temperature Points provide us more precise control over our CPU undervolt.

Ryzen 5 9600X Undervolt & Overclock to 5818 MHz | SkatterBencher #79
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.19 часов назад
Today we undervolt and overclock the AMD Ryzen 7 9600X processor up to 5811 MHz. I do this by leveraging asynchronous eCLK to stretch the V/F curve beyond the Precision Boost limit. Of course, that also requires finetuning with the new Curve Shaper. In this video, I break down the Ryzen 5 9600X tuning process into four unique overclocking strategies for beginner and advanced overclockers. 00:00...

    Your explanation of curve optimizer in your video from 3 weeks ago was a lifesaver. Thank you so much. I was able to push my 9950x to -24/-26 (CCX0/1) netting 5.4% cinebench performance without raising the power limits or temps. I'm currently 24 hours into a stability test with aida64 and working on a prime95 stability test to validate it's stable. If you have any advice on stability testing it would be appreciated! side note: idk why but applying overclock/co settings in ryzen master on my asus x670 creator mobo would cause my pc to not boot until I cleared the CMOS. I assume it's a bug but I had to use the bios for all the tweeking.

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher 3 дня назад

      Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy my video helped! As for CO testing: don't forget to mix workloads when testing. A common error is to test CO only with stress test tools. Those tools tend to run high temperature and moderate frequency. But sometimes CO is unstable at medium temperature and high frequency, or high frequency and high temperature. I found that looping the Y-Cruncher component stress tester can sometimes also uncover CO instabilities.

    • @ninele7
      @ninele7 2 дня назад

      I run AIDA FPU/Memory/Cache stress test to detect unstable CO. On settings that Cinebench runs for infinite amount of time without any problems, this test crashes my PC in 5-10 seconds. I needed to lower CO by 15 points to make this test run for some extended amount of time.

      Lol... It does show though that if you did use the most optimal water cooling setup such as direct die that it should definitely improve performance with the amount of voltage that is used which will lower temperatures which will allow higher frequency.

    • @JMNovak1011
      @JMNovak1011 3 дня назад

      @@kevinerbs2778 yeah it's a very unique give and take between voltage temperature and frequency. There's also quality of the cores which comes into play. We've seen that in a lot of different Zen cores now where one person can hit a certain frequency at a certain voltage and someone else will be 100-200 megahertz under that at the same voltage. I mean you also see it with how CCD 0 usually has the highest binned cores and CCD 1 has lower performing cores because AMD loves to get rid of their trash CCDs by just sticking them on the dual CCD chips

      Peltiers are low capacity and grossly inefficient. Probably better to start with an AIO, then duct a window unit air conditioner around the PC, and modify its compressor for variable speed (or start with a model that has that feature). Dry air, no temperature differentials, and you get the extra-low-temperature benefits for RAM and GPU too.

    I tried to ovekclock my 9950x with async eCLK and Curve Shaper. It goes pretty good, but I stuck at 44500 scores in Cinebench R23. I looked around what happened and found that I hit TDC limit. It stuck at 180A while in PBO setting limit set 250A. Thermals are pretty good, about 77C at 230W, at this point the 9950x can go way higher. Ryzen master shows PPT, TDP and EDC with correct values which have been set in bios, but I can`t go higher then 180A at TDC limit. MB ASrock x670e Taichi, 3.06 bios. Is there any other way to change TDC limit? SMU and PBO not works.

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher 4 дня назад

      That sounds like a BIOS or board issue. I just checked with my 9950X and X670E Hero and can easily go over 190A in CBR23 (46100 points). If I remember correctly, it is possible for the motherboard manufacturer to impose limits to Precision Boost Overdrive settings. So regardless of what's configured in BIOS or Ryzen Master, those limits would be imposed.

      @@SkatterBencher Ok, I wrote the ticket to ASrock support about this TDC limitatiton. This limit is a big joke, X670e Taichi had 24 phase vrm, and if correct there are 105A rated each. And they are limit it to 180A with 24 phase. I think even if it will be halfed it will run pretty well without overheating at 180A.

    I’m also having some weirdness with curve shaper on my 9700X. I tuned my max frequency band first and ended up with -6. Moving down to the high band I needed some positive offset, I tried a really high value just to see what it would do and it locked my cpu at 610.5 MHz (600MHz x my ECLK)

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher 7 дней назад

      Yes! I have another 97X follow up video schedule where I talk about this specific issue a little more in detail. I also already provided the feedback to AMD too (ahead of the Ryzen 9000 launch actually). Long story short, it seems there's some missing guardbands for Curve Shaper allowing the configuration of "illegal" voltages. A voltage is "illegal" when for a given frequency you're requesting a voltage that's lower than for a lower frequency. For example, let's say you're aggressive overvolting the high frequency and undervolting the maximum frequency, the curve might pull the voltage target for "max frequencies" below "high frequencies." It seems the VFT algorithm freaks out and goes into some kind of a safe mode. I've seen this behavior on the 9600X and 9700X but not on the 9950X. The Curve Shaper behavior is also a little different for single vs dual CCD chips. I should maybe make a video about that too. For example, the Max Frequency Curve Shaper setting doesn't do anything for the single-CCD chips. The way to solve what you're seeing is to set all Max Frequency points to +30. This won't affect the curve with the 97X but will ensure that those VFT points stay above the ones you'll undervolt with High Frequency Curve Shaper.

    Wow, this video is wonderful, it explains the bios settings I don't understand AND graphs everything to make it make so much more sense.

    Occt stress test is not realistic. I used the stress test to run negative voltage offset on my 7800x3d. Was stable in OCCT for 1 hour, crashed within 30min in Pubg!! I had to remove most of the undervolting to run the game! This is a theoretical oc and will not give the same gains in demanding games running without fps lock. In Pubg you actually get better frame pacing with less hitching running Pbo with -100Mhz speed (regression) because the cpu doesnt have a power budget to run 5Ghz in that game paired with a 4080 comp settings. Doing this lowers the vid voltage @4.9Ghz so that 72w power budget stretches further. 72w just isnt enough and you can't increase it?!. Increasing SoC voltage eats up the power budget with about 5watts. In truth there is no headroom at all on that 7800x3d. I just hope they give the 9800x3d more wattage headroom but I doubt it because the chip will go nuclear in Avx512 workloads and take damage. I wish someone could leak a custom bios with more power budget if its possible like we saw on nVidia graphic cards.

      You shouldn't rely exclusively on the OCCT (all-core) stress test for Curve Optimizer, because that tests a specific point of the VFT curve (high temperature at moderate frequency). The likely reason why you see stability in OCCT and not in games is because your game is using a different part of the VFT curve (moderate temperature at high frequency). That's why the OCCT all-core stress test is only one of the points of my Curve Optimizer process, which usually starts with less heavy workloads.
